Mouse Deer

Mandalay Zoo has successfully established a mouse deer (chevrotain) breeding program for conservation purposes.

Detailed Information

"Mouse deer are among the smallest hoofed mammals in the world and are found in dense tropical rainforests throughout Southeast Asia, including Myanmar. Although their name includes the word “deer,” they are not true deer species. However, they have a deer-like body structure combined with a tiny size and shy behavior similar to that of a mouse. Mouse deer are mostly active at night, feeding on leaves, fruits, and tender plants, and they use their excellent hiding abilities to escape from predators. Male mouse deer do not have antlers, but they possess sharp, tusk-like canine teeth for self-defense.
Mandalay Zoo has successfully established a mouse deer (chevrotain) breeding program for conservation purposes. Mouse deer are currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, but their populations are still threatened in some areas due to habitat loss and hunting. Through this program, the zoo aims to support the long-term conservation of the species by ensuring healthy captive breeding, raising awareness, and helping to maintain a stable population for future protection efforts."
