Pelicans are large water birds known for their special throat pouch, which can hold up to 3 gallons of water and helps them catch fish and regulate body temperature. There are 8 species of pelicans worldwide; the Dalmatian Pelican is the largest, while the Spot-billed Pelican is kept at Yadanabon Zoological Garden.
They live in wetlands, lakes, and rivers, reproduce at around 3 years old, and lay 1–3 eggs with an incubation period of about 30 days. Pelicans can live for about 30 years and play an important role in maintaining the balance of wetland ecosystems. However, due to habitat loss, they are currently listed as Near Threatened.
